ABUJA — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed the purported nomination of former President Goodluck Jonathan, insisting that no candidate can be validly submitted outside its official online nomination portal.
The electoral umpire clarified that the nomination process for elections is strictly regulated and can only be conducted through its designated electronic portal by duly registered political parties, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the Commission’s guidelines.
INEC’s position follows reports and speculation surrounding Jonathan’s alleged nomination, which had generated widespread public interest and political debate.
The Commission stressed that it does not recognise nominations made through letters, public announcements or any unofficial channel, maintaining that only submissions completed through the authorised online platform will be accepted for processing.
The clarification is expected to put to rest growing speculation over the former president’s alleged candidacy, while reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to a transparent, credible and technology-driven electoral process.
INEC urged political parties, aspirants and the public to rely only on official information regarding candidate nominations and electoral procedures, warning against misinformation capable of misleading voters and stakeholders.
The Commission reiterated that all political parties must comply with the established nomination process, insisting that adherence to the rules remains essential to safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
