The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suffered a major political blow in Sokoto State after thousands of its supporters abandoned the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Goronyo Local Government Area.
The mass defection, involving supporters predominantly from Gorau Town, is being viewed as a significant boost for the APC’s growing influence in Sokoto East Senatorial District ahead of future political contests.
The defectors were formally received at a well-attended rally in Gorau/Takakume Ward, where APC leaders declared that the party’s expanding support base reflected increasing public confidence in the administration of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto.
Welcoming the new members, APC Zonal Vice Chairman for Sokoto East, Alhaji Muhammad Musa Sarkin Alaru, assured them of equal rights and opportunities within the party, stressing that the APC remains open to all who share its vision for the state’s development. He also commended Senior Special Assistant, Alhaji Hussaini N. Umar Gorau, for mobilising grassroots support and championing community welfare.
Speaking at the event, Hussaini Gorau credited the wave of defections to what he described as the transformative leadership of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto and Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. He said the administration’s investments in road infrastructure, rural development, security and the fight against banditry had continued to attract widespread public support.
APC Chairman in Goronyo Local Government Area, Alhaji Sa’idu Muhammad Goronyo, urged the new entrants to remain loyal and work with existing members to consolidate the party’s dominance across the area.
Explaining the reason for their decision, spokesperson for the defectors, Nasiru Mukhtar Gorau, said they were persuaded by the government’s visible achievements, particularly the delivery of infrastructure projects and essential social amenities in rural communities.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Alhaji Hussaini N. Umar Gorau and APC Sokoto East Senatorial candidate, Alhaji Umar Ajiya, in recognition of their contributions to the development of the area and the growth of the party.
The latest defection marks another boost for the APC in Sokoto State, while dealing a fresh setback to the ADC’s grassroots support in Goronyo Local Government Area.
