The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has alerted Nigerians to an attempted unauthorised takeover of its official X account, formerly known as Twitter, warning the public to ignore any suspicious posts emanating from the platform.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the DHQ said the incident was being handled as a cybersecurity matter, with technical measures immediately activated to secure the account and block further unauthorised access.
The military authorities disclosed that efforts were ongoing to completely restore control of the account, amid concerns that compromised access could be used to circulate false or misleading information.
The DHQ therefore urged members of the public, media organisations and other stakeholders to exercise caution and disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may appear on the account while the recovery process continues.
The statement stressed that the Armed Forces remained committed to safeguarding the integrity of their official communications and ensuring that Nigerians receive accurate and credible information about military operations and security developments.
“Members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period,” the DHQ warned.
As a precaution, the military urged Nigerians to rely on its verified communication channels on other social media platforms for authentic updates.
These include Defence Headquarters Nigeria on Facebook, @defenceheadquarters on Instagram and the Defence Headquarters Nigeria WhatsApp Channel.
The attempted breach comes at a time when digital platforms have become a major avenue through which the Armed Forces communicate information on security operations, military activities and national security developments.
The DHQ said it would issue further updates as the situation develops, while thanking Nigerians and the media for their understanding, vigilance and cooperation.
The military’s message is clear: until control of the X account is fully restored, Nigerians should treat any questionable post from the platform with caution and verify it through the DHQ’s other official channels.
