Troops of the Nigerian Army, working alongside a tactical team, have dealt a major blow to Boko Haram operations in Adamawa State, killing 21 terrorists and destroying a suspected hideout in the Kopre Mountain area of Hong Local Government Area.
The successful operation, carried out between the early hours of August 26 and August 27, followed intelligence reports indicating the presence of Boko Haram fighters around the mountainous terrain.
According to military sources, the troops quietly moved into the area between about 1:30 a.m. on August 26 and 4:10 a.m. the following day before launching a surprise assault on the terrorist camp.
The attack reportedly caught the insurgents off guard, resulting in the death of 21 Boko Haram fighters. Several others, believed to have sustained gunshot wounds, managed to flee into the surrounding terrain.
The troops subsequently overran and destroyed the camp, including logistics and other materials recovered from the location.
Among the items seized were AK-47 rifles, magazines and quantities of 7.62mm special ammunition. The troops also destroyed several motorcycles and bicycles allegedly used by the terrorists for movement and logistics.
Several jerrycans filled with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) were also destroyed during the operation, further disrupting the terrorists’ logistical capacity.
However, the operation came at a cost, as one member of the hunter group supporting the troops was killed during the encounter. No loss of military equipment was reported.
The latest offensive underscores the continued efforts of troops under Operation Hadin Kai to dismantle terrorist networks, destroy their camps and cut off their access to weapons, fuel and other supplies in Adamawa and neighbouring areas.
The operation is expected to further constrain the ability of Boko Haram elements to move freely and maintain operational bases in the region.
