MAIDUGURI — Troops operating under Operation Hadin Kai have thwarted an overnight attempt by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters to infiltrate a military position in Borno State, killing four terrorists and recovering four AK-47 rifles.
The attempted breach occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday at Check Point 4, Alpha Company, where soldiers of the 81 Division Task Force Battalion were deployed.
According to military sources, the troops detected the suspected terrorists as they crawled towards the defensive position from the Gulumba Gana axis, apparently attempting to approach the location under the cover of darkness.
The soldiers responded swiftly, opening fire on the advancing fighters and forcing them to retreat into the surrounding area.
When troops returned to the location during an exploitation operation around 6:00 a.m., they discovered the bodies of four terrorists believed to have been killed during the exchange of fire.
Four AK-47 rifles were also recovered from the scene.
Further evidence suggested that the troops may have inflicted additional casualties on the fleeing group, as blood trails were reportedly found along the route taken by the terrorists as they withdrew.
The operation was completed without any casualty on the side of the Nigerian troops, who returned safely to their base at about 6:53 a.m.
Military sources said the security situation in the area remained generally calm but unpredictable, stressing that troops remained alert and prepared to respond to any further attempt by terrorist elements to breach their positions.
The latest operation underscores the continued efforts by troops under Operation Hadin Kai to prevent terrorist movements and protect military positions and surrounding communities across the volatile parts of Borno State.
