Lagos, Nigeria — The long arm of the law has finally caught up with a Nigerian man who stole more than ₦64 million, as a Lagos court sentenced him to 12 years behind bars.
Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday convicted and sentenced Chukwuemeka Udezuka to 12 years’ imprisonment for stealing a total sum of ₦64,060,000.
The court found Udezuka guilty of unlawfully diverting the huge amount, bringing an end to a case that highlighted the growing crackdown on financial crimes in the country.
Delivering judgment, Justice Oshodi held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the defendant’s conviction and subsequent sentence.
The 12-year jail term sends a strong warning to individuals involved in financial crimes that corruption, fraud, and theft of public or private funds will not go unpunished.
Legal observers described the judgment as another significant victory in the fight against economic and financial crimes, noting that the conviction reinforces the judiciary’s commitment to accountability and justice.
With the ruling, Udezuka will spend the next 12 years in prison, marking a dramatic fall for a man whose actions cost victims more than ₦64 million.
The verdict adds to a growing list of convictions secured by anti-corruption agencies as authorities intensify efforts to recover stolen assets and deter financial misconduct across Nigeria.
