Atiku Blasts NBC: “No to Media Gag Ahead of Elections”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticised a recent advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission, describing it as a dangerous attempt to stifle press freedom ahead of elections.

In a statement, Atiku warned that the directive could shrink the democratic space and muzzle critical voices within Nigeria’s vibrant media industry, which he said has earned global respect for its resilience and professionalism.

He expressed concern that such regulations often surface during election periods, arguing that they appear more targeted at suppressing dissent than promoting ethical journalism.

“I stand firmly with Nigeria’s broadcast industry and all media platforms resisting this creeping censorship,” he declared.

The former Vice President stressed that ethical standards should not be selectively enforced during political campaigns, insisting they must remain constant and impartial.

Atiku further questioned the timing and tone of the advisory, suggesting it reflects a deeper agenda to control public narratives rather than guarantee a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.

The remarks have added to growing debate over media regulation in Nigeria, with stakeholders warning that any perceived restriction on press freedom could undermine democratic principles as the country moves closer to another election cycle.
