APC TIGHTENS GRIP AS NIGERIA’S GOVERNORS MAP REVEALS LOPSIDED POWER PLAY

By Our Political Desk

As Nigeria inches toward another defining political season, the balance of power across the 36 states paints a clear picture: the All Progressives Congress (APC) is firmly in the driver’s seat, commanding the largest bloc of governors nationwide as of December 14, 2025.

From the oil-rich South-South to the vast North-East and the political nerve centre of the South-West, the ruling party’s footprint stretches wide and deep—signalling a formidable structure ahead of future electoral battles.

With governors spread across Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Yobe, the APC dominates Nigeria’s political geography.

Big names like Babagana Umara Zulum (Borno), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dikko Umar Radda (Katsina) and Mai Mala Buni (Yobe) anchor the party’s influence, blending incumbency power with regional strongholds.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), once Nigeria’s dominant force, now controls a slimmer but strategic spread of states. Governors Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau) and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) keep the party relevant across key zones.

While reduced in number, PDP’s presence in politically vocal states like Oyo and Bauchi ensures it remains a loud opposition voice rather than a fading echo.

Nigeria’s political diversity is underscored by single-state strongholds held by other parties:

Osun flies the flag of the Accord Party under the charismatic Ademola Adeleke.

Abia remains firmly Labour Party territory with Alex Otti, symbolising LP’s breakthrough beyond protest politics.

Anambra continues its ideological journey under APGA, led by Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

Kano, a political heavyweight on its own, stands with the NNPP under Abba Kabir Yusuf, giving the party national relevance.

The governors’ map tells a simple but powerful story: APC reigns supreme, opposition parties are fragmented but resilient, and regional loyalties still matter. As policy battles, alliances and future elections loom, Nigeria’s governors remain the real power brokers—shaping not just their states, but the nation’s political destiny.

In Nigerian politics, the states speak loudly—and right now, most of them speak APC.
