Troops conducting security operations in Plateau State have arrested a 29-year-old man suspected of belonging to a Berom militia group while allegedly attempting to sell a stolen cow at a cattle market in Bokkos Local Government Area.
The arrest was carried out on Friday, September 25, 2026, by troops of Sector 8, Operation WHIRL PUNCH, working alongside personnel from Sector 5.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspect, identified as Mabwe Zakaria, was apprehended at about 11:30 a.m. after the owner of the cattle reportedly recognised the animal at the market.
According to preliminary findings, the cattle is believed to be among livestock allegedly rustled during an attack on Fulani herders in Quan’Pan Local Government Area on August 18, 2026.
The development has brought renewed attention to the security challenges surrounding cattle rustling and attacks on farming and herding communities in parts of Plateau State.
Sources said the suspect remains in military custody and is currently undergoing interrogation as investigators work to establish how the animal came into his possession.
The investigation is also expected to determine whether other individuals were involved in the alleged livestock theft and whether the suspect had any connection to the wider incident involving the herders.
Security personnel have continued operations across communities affected by cattle rustling, attacks and other criminal activities, with troops working to track down those suspected of exploiting the prevailing security challenges.
Authorities have continued to urge residents and livestock owners to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in identifying stolen animals, tracking criminal networks and preventing further attacks.
The latest arrest, according to security sources, forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal activities and improve security around vulnerable communities and livestock markets in Plateau State.
