Nigeria’s flagship Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has achieved a major milestone, increasing its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), surpassing its original nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd.
The feat marks a significant boost for Africa’s largest refinery, underscoring its growing role in transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape and reducing dependence on imported petroleum products.
Industry observers say the refinery’s ability to exceed its designed processing capacity highlights improved operational efficiency and strengthens confidence in the facility’s long-term sustainability.
Located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos State, the multi-billion-dollar refinery has continued to ramp up production since commencing operations, supplying refined products to both domestic and international markets.
The increase to 700,000 bpd is expected to further enhance fuel availability, support foreign exchange savings, and deepen Nigeria’s quest for energy security.
Analysts believe the development could also boost exports of refined petroleum products, reinforce Nigeria’s position as a key energy hub in Africa, and create additional opportunities across the oil and gas value chain.
With the latest achievement, the Dangote Refinery has once again demonstrated its capacity to reshape the continent’s refining industry, setting a new benchmark for large-scale industrial operations in Africa.
