Two Condemned Inmates Die in Akwa Ibom Correctional Facility

By Fatima Mukhtar

Two inmates on death row have been confirmed dead at the Uyo Custodial Centre in Akwa Ibom State.

The Akwa Ibom Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) disclosed the incident on Thursday, attributing the deaths to a power-related fault from a transformer within the facility.

Frank Okonkwo, the NCoS State Controller, told journalists in Uyo that the transformer exploded, causing a serious electrical surge that affected the section where the inmates were held. He added that two correctional officers also sustained injuries, while several electrical installations in the facility were damaged.

Describing the incident as “unfortunate and deeply regrettable,” Okonkwo confirmed that the families of the deceased inmates had already been informed.

More updates are expected as authorities continue investigations into the cause of the electrical fault.
