Former Defence Minister Gen. Theophilus (T.Y.) Danjuma has accused Nigeria’s armed forces of siding with armed bandits alleging that they “collude,” “facilitate their movement” and “cover them,” and warned that relying on the military to stop the killings would be fatal.
Danjuma made the remark while speaking at a public event gathered by ABC News through an online handle. Remarks first widely reported in March 2018 and later revisited in media coverage, Danjuma told listeners the security crisis amounts to an existential threat. “If you are depending on the Armed Forces to stop the killings, you will all die one by one,” he said, and urged citizens to “rise up” and defend their communities.
The explosive allegation prompted an official pushback at the time, with the Presidency responding to Danjuma’s comments and security agencies acknowledging reports of misconduct while disputing broad claims of collusion.
Danjuma — a retired general and former Minister of Defence whose interventions on national security often attract attention — framed his warning as a call to action, arguing that failure to check the violence could plunge parts of Nigeria into chaos. Analysts say the remarks reopen painful questions about accountability, military conduct in conflict zones, and the state’s ability to protect civilians.
