The Ogun State Police Command has arrested five persons in connection with the alleged assault of a Police Constabulary officer and the destruction of his mobile phone during a confrontation in Ifo Local Government Area.
The suspects were taken into custody following an incident that reportedly began with a disagreement over a ₦25,000 debt and later escalated into an alleged attack on police personnel carrying out their duties.
The trouble reportedly started on August 20, 2026, when Qudus Akinwande, a resident of the Abata area of Ifo, lodged a complaint alleging that he was assaulted at his residence by an Army officer identified as Chukwuka Dauda.
Akinwande reportedly told the police that the dispute was connected to a ₦25,000 debt, during which Dauda allegedly took possession of his cooking gas cylinder.
Following the complaint, police authorities on August 21 deployed W/Insp. Eno Aladi and Police Constabulary officer Lateef Jimoh to invite Dauda for questioning.
However, what was expected to be a routine police invitation reportedly turned confrontational after Dauda allegedly declined to accompany the officers that day, saying he would honour the invitation the following day.
The situation allegedly worsened when two neighbours, identified as George Jeremiah and Ayinde Ololade, intervened. The pair reportedly attacked Constabulary officer Jimoh, leaving him with injuries.
In the process, the officer’s iPhone 12 Pro Max was also allegedly damaged.
Following the development, operatives attached to the Surveillance and Anti-Robbery teams swung into action and arrested five suspects at about 10:45 a.m. on August 22.
Those arrested were identified by the police as George Jeremiah, Ayinde Ololade, Joy Chukwudi, Paul Matthew and George Stephen.
The suspects are currently assisting detectives with the investigation as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and destruction of the officer’s property.
The police said the suspects would be prosecuted under the relevant laws after the completion of the investigation.
The Command also warned against attacks or interference with police officers and other security personnel performing lawful duties, urging members of the public to resolve disputes through legitimate legal channels rather than violence.
