Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has directed security agencies in the state to step up collaboration, intelligence-sharing and preventive measures as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor gave the charge while presiding over the state’s 19th Routine Security Council Meeting held on Monday at the Government House in Damaturu. He was represented at the meeting by his Deputy, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana.
The meeting brought together heads of security and law enforcement agencies to assess the state’s security situation, identify emerging threats and review strategies for safeguarding lives, property and the relative peace enjoyed across Yobe.
Governor Buni stressed that maintaining security remained a collective responsibility, urging security formations to remain vigilant and respond swiftly to developments that could threaten public safety.
He also called on residents to support security agencies by providing credible information capable of helping to prevent crime and other security breaches.
With political activities expected to intensify in the months ahead, Buni warned against allowing partisan interests to undermine the peace and stability of the state.
He commended the security agencies for their continued cooperation, describing the routine council meetings as a vital platform for assessing security challenges, improving coordination and adopting measures to protect citizens.
Council Moves Against Political Thuggery
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin; Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd.); and commanders of the NSCDC and NDLEA, alongside the General Manager of YOROTA, disclosed some of the key resolutions reached.
The council agreed to strengthen engagement and intelligence-sharing between security agencies, political organisations and other relevant stakeholders as campaigns, rallies and political meetings increase across the state.
It also issued a strong warning to politicians against sponsoring, harbouring or encouraging political thugs, insisting that political activities must be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.
Security agencies were further tasked with improving coordination during rallies, campaigns, meetings and other public gatherings to prevent criminal elements from exploiting political activities.
The council maintained that the peace Yobe has achieved over the years must not be sacrificed on the altar of partisan politics.
It therefore urged political actors and their supporters to put the collective interest of the state ahead of political differences.
Those present at the meeting included the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mohammed Goje; Commissioner of Police; Brigade Commander, 27 Task Force Brigade; Director of the State Security Service; Commandants of the NSCDC and NDLEA; Controller of the Nigeria Immigration Service; Permanent Secretary, Cabinet and Security; General Manager, YOROTA; and senior officials of the Cabinet and Security Department.
The Buni administration reaffirmed its determination to work with security agencies, traditional institutions, political stakeholders and residents to preserve peace and create a secure environment for development across Yobe State.
