A 25-year-old suspected fighter of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has abandoned the terrorist group and surrendered to Nigerian troops in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.
The development marks another significant defection from the terror group as sustained military operations continue to mount pressure on its fighters and hideouts across the North-East.
The former fighter, identified as Alhaji Ali Gambo Kanuri, a native of Ngarinna village in Monguno LGA, reportedly spent about eight months with ISWAP after he was introduced to the group by a friend.
Military sources said Gambo eventually became disillusioned with the realities of life inside the terrorist camp and decided to break away from the group.
His decision was also reportedly influenced by the harsh conditions facing members of the organisation amid intensified military operations targeting terrorist positions in Borno and other parts of the North-East.
After escaping from the area controlled by the terrorists, Gambo made his way to Monguno town, where he surrendered himself to troops.
He was taken into custody and subsequently handed over to the appropriate authorities for further processing in accordance with established procedures for individuals who voluntarily disengage from terrorist organisations.
The surrender comes as security forces continue to intensify counter-terrorism and clearance operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP elements operating in Borno State.
The military has repeatedly encouraged members of terrorist groups who are willing to abandon violence to surrender peacefully and take advantage of established screening, deradicalisation and rehabilitation processes.
Gambo’s defection is expected to provide security authorities with further insight into the activities and conditions within the terrorist group as operations against its fighters continue.
