Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign recorded another significant breakthrough on Saturday as a senior Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) finance commander surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Borno State, alongside 46 terrorists and their family members who abandoned the insurgent group under mounting military pressure.
The high-profile defection is being viewed by security observers as a major blow to ISWAP’s operational capability, with the surrender of a key figure believed to have controlled the group’s finances, logistics and resource distribution within one of its notorious enclaves.
In a statement, the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, said the senior operative voluntarily surrendered to troops of the 3 Battalion under the 24 Task Force Brigade at about 6:45 a.m. on July 25, 2026, along the Ladari–Jegarawa–Tunokalia axis of the Gamboru–Wulgo Main Supply Route.
Military investigations identified the suspect as the chief finance operative of the ISWAP enclave in Jubillaram, where he allegedly coordinated the group’s financial transactions, supervised logistics and facilitated the movement of supplies used to sustain terrorist operations across the Lake Chad region.
During preliminary debriefing, the suspect reportedly disclosed vital intelligence on ISWAP’s leadership hierarchy, funding channels, logistics network and operational strategies. Military authorities believe the information will strengthen ongoing intelligence-led offensives aimed at dismantling the terrorist group’s remaining strongholds.
The surrender came amid a fresh wave of defections from insurgent camps, with 46 terrorists and their family members voluntarily laying down their arms at various locations across the North-East theatre of operations after sustained ground assaults and precision airstrikes by Nigerian troops.
According to the military, all those who surrendered have undergone initial screening in line with operational procedures, while profiling and further investigations continue.
Security experts described the latest development as a strategic setback for ISWAP, noting that finance and logistics coordinators are among the most critical figures within terrorist organisations because they oversee funding, procure weapons and supplies, coordinate fighter payments and keep operational networks functioning.
Military sources attributed the growing number of defections to the relentless pressure being mounted through coordinated land offensives, precision airstrikes, intelligence-driven missions and the disruption of terrorist supply routes, leaving insurgents with shrinking options for survival.
Operation HADIN KAI reaffirmed its resolve to sustain the offensive against terrorism until insurgent groups are completely dismantled, while calling on remaining fighters to surrender and embrace the Federal Government’s deradicalisation and reintegration programme.
