Nigeria’s campaign against fuel smuggling received a major boost in Katsina State after security operatives intercepted a tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), prompting the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to launch a tougher offensive against economic saboteurs operating along the nation’s border corridors.
The seizure, carried out under the Operation Whirlwind initiative, is being viewed by authorities as a significant breakthrough in efforts to dismantle the criminal syndicates responsible for diverting subsidised petroleum products out of the country.
Officials disclosed that the truck tanker, bearing registration number SBA 146 XA, was intercepted along the Birnin Kuka Outstation axis in Mashi Local Government Area, a strategic border route frequently exploited by smugglers.
Speaking during the formal transfer of the seized tanker to the NMDPRA in Katsina, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Deputy Comptroller Aliyu Abubakar (Professor in Practice), described fuel smuggling as a direct assault on Nigeria’s economy and national security.
According to him, the illegal diversion of petroleum products not only robs the government of billions of naira in revenue but also disrupts domestic fuel supply, encourages scarcity and strengthens transnational criminal networks operating across West Africa.
He declared that the Nigeria Customs Service has intensified intelligence-led operations to identify, intercept and prosecute individuals involved in the illicit trade.
“The era of treating fuel smuggling as a minor offence is over. We will continue to collaborate with the NMDPRA and other security agencies to identify, disrupt and dismantle every network involved in this criminal enterprise,” Abubakar said.
He added, “We will always partner with the NMDPRA to fight this evil act of fuel diversion.”
The Customs chief also appealed to residents of border communities, transporters, filling station operators and petroleum marketers to become partners in the fight by providing credible intelligence capable of exposing smuggling routes and suspects.
Receiving the seized petroleum product, the Katsina State Coordinator of the NMDPRA, Umar Muhammad, commended Customs officers for what he described as another decisive blow against fuel diversion.
He assured that the Authority would strengthen monitoring mechanisms across the petroleum distribution chain to prevent illegal movements and ensure that products allocated for Nigerians are delivered to their rightful destinations.
“Our responsibility is to ensure petroleum products reach legitimate consumers, and we will continue working closely with Customs to achieve that objective,” he said.
Security analysts believe the latest seizure underscores the Federal Government’s growing determination to protect Nigeria’s energy resources and frustrate criminal cartels exploiting border communities for illicit fuel trade.
The handover ceremony, held at the Customs House in Katsina, was attended by the Customs Area Controller, members of the Command’s management team and senior officials of the NMDPRA.
For residents of Katsina and other border states, the operation sends a clear message: the dragnet is tightening, and authorities are determined to ensure that every litre of fuel meant for Nigerians is protected from the hands of economic saboteurs.
