U S –Nigeria Working Group Closes Ranks as Abuja, Washington Deepen Security War on Terror, Banditry

Nigeria has stepped up its security diplomacy with the United States, deepening bilateral cooperation against terrorism, banditry and organised crime under the U.S.–Nigeria Working Group on Security.

National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment at a high-level strategic session in Abuja, describing the renewed engagement as part of a broader effort to consolidate recent operational gains and strengthen national security through intelligence-led partnerships.

The talks, held with a senior U.S. delegation led by Allison Hooker, come as Nigeria recalibrates its counter-terrorism and internal security framework to address evolving threats—from insurgency in the North-East to banditry and communal violence in the North-West and North-Central.

The presence of Service Chiefs and heads of the intelligence community alongside Nigeria’s Ambassador to Washington underscored the political and operational seriousness attached to the engagement. Officials agreed that today’s security challenges can no longer be tackled in isolation, but require structured intelligence cooperation, joint planning and sustained capacity building.

Central to the discussions was intelligence sharing, seen as critical to improving early-warning systems, disrupting terror financing networks and enhancing the precision of military and law-enforcement operations—while minimising civilian harm.

Beyond kinetic responses, the working group placed strong emphasis on community protection and prevention strategies. Participants noted that insecurity is increasingly driven by local grievances, weak governance and socio-economic pressures, making community-centred safety mechanisms essential to stopping recruitment into extremist and criminal networks.

The U.S. pledge of support in defence articles, specialised training, capacity development and counter-terrorism financing reflects Washington’s recognition of Nigeria as a cornerstone of regional stability. As Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria’s security trajectory has direct implications for West Africa, the Sahel and the Gulf of Guinea.

Special focus on protecting vulnerable communities, including Christian communities in Northern Nigeria, also signalled a shift towards a more inclusive national security approach—one that treats the protection of all citizens as both a moral duty and a strategic necessity.

With the renewed U.S.–Nigeria engagement gaining momentum, officials say the partnership is expected to strengthen intelligence-driven operations, boost confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions and reinforce the country’s leadership role in promoting peace and stability across the region.
