Radda Wins French Funding Boost, Fast-Tracks Danja Hydropower Project

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has scored another major victory for the state’s renewable energy ambitions after a high-level meeting in Paris with Oceans Énergie, developers of the forthcoming 1MW mini-hydroelectric power plant at Danja Dam.

The talks, held in the French capital, delivered a breakthrough: the formal approval of counterpart funding for the project by the French Treasury—a critical green light that places the Danja hydropower initiative on a fast, irreversible track.

The approval letter, presented directly to Governor Radda by Oceans Énergie’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Minkaila Salami, signals strong French confidence in Katsina’s clean energy roadmap and deepens the state’s international partnerships in sustainable power development.

Governor Radda, accompanied by his Special Adviser on Power and Energy, Dr. Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed, and Technical Assistant on Renewable Energy, Engr. Abdulaziz Kabir Abdullahi, described the development as a “major milestone” for rural electrification, agricultural expansion, and grassroots economic growth.

“We are committed to accelerating renewable energy solutions that empower our communities, strengthen agriculture, support healthcare, and boost local productivity,” the governor said.

Both Katsina State and Oceans Énergie finalized a detailed execution timeline covering engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning. The project will prioritize community engagement, technical quality, and capacity building for Katsina indigenes.

A technical team from Oceans Énergie is scheduled to arrive in Katsina next month for the official groundbreaking at Danja Dam, marking the project’s transition from planning to field implementation.

The hydropower plant is expected to supply clean, stable electricity to surrounding communities, energize irrigation schemes, stimulate agro-industrial activities, and advance Nigeria’s national ambitions under the Energy Transition Plan and the 2060 Net Zero target.
