…… Seeks Urgent Government Support

The Eye Care Glaucoma Initiative, Borno State chapter, has raised concern over the increasing burden of glaucoma, describing it as a “silent sight-killer” that requires urgent attention from government and stakeholders.
Chairman of the Initiative, Garba Shettima, made the call during a congratulatory visit to the General Manager of Radio Nigeria Peace FM, Abba Muhammad Dikko, at the station’s headquarters in Maiduguri.
Shettima said the association has more than 3,200 registered members across the state who need regular medical support, noting that glaucoma treatment is expensive and often beyond the reach of many patients. He appealed to the Borno State Government, development partners, NGOs, clubs, associations, and well-meaning individuals to assist patients with drugs, screening, and other forms of support.
He also raised concern over the shortage of specialists in glaucoma care, stating that the state currently does not have a single doctor professionally trained in glaucoma management. Shettima urged the government to sponsor doctors to specialize in the field to reduce the hardship faced by patients.
Responding, the General Manager of Peace FM, Abba Muhammad Dikko, thanked the delegation for the visit and assured them of the station’s commitment to raising public awareness about glaucoma. He said the station will continue to support the association, adding that its doors remain open for collaboration.
Dikko commended the Eye Care Glaucoma Initiative for partnering with the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital during last year’s World Glaucoma Day, where free drugs and eyeglasses were provided to residents.
He further pledged that Peace FM will cover all activities of the association free of charge. As a gesture of support, the General Manager also approved a free 30-minute weekly programme for the association to educate the public on the signs, risks, and prevention of glaucoma.
