Nigeria Links Power Grid with West Africa, Boosting Regional Electricity Supply

By Fatima Mukhtar

In a landmark achievement, Nigeria has successfully connected its national electricity grid with those of other West African countries under the West African Power Pool (WAPP). The announcement was made by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

This milestone means Nigeria is now part of a unified electricity network spanning 14 countries in the region, including Ghana, Benin, Togo, Niger, and Côte d’Ivoire. The integration allows for the exchange of electricity between countries, helping to reduce power shortages and strengthen regional cooperation and economic growth within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

According to NISO, the interconnection will improve the reliability of power supply, reduce energy losses, and foster stability through economic collaboration.

Experts have described the development as a major step in Nigeria’s electricity sector, particularly as the country continues efforts to address persistent power shortages.

The successful integration of Nigeria’s grid with the West African network is expected to pave the way for cross-border electricity trade, enhance energy security, and promote stronger regional ties.
