The National Human Rights Commission NHRC has raised fresh concerns over the rising cases of killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks across Nigeria, describing the situation as a grave threat to the country’s human rights obligations.
In a statement signed on Thursday by Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, Director Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, the Commission said the recent abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of worshippers in Kwara State underscore the deepening insecurity confronting the nation.
The NHRC quoted its Executive Secretary, Dr. Tony Ojukwu as saying that human life in Nigeria is fast losing its dignity, lamenting that the country is still battling Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists 15 years after the insurgency began.
Ojukwu said Nigerians expect immediate and decisive action from government to safeguard lives, stressing that the right to life is both a legal and moral obligation. Every life is precious and should be preserved. Incidents such as the Chibok schoolgirls abduction, the recent Maga school attack, and other similar tragedies question the effectiveness of the Safe Schools Declaration to which Nigeria is a signatory, he said.
Citing Section 33 1 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, Ojukwu reaffirmed that the right to life is guaranteed and must not be intentionally violated. He added that Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, along with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, also places a duty on Nigeria to protect citizens from arbitrary loss of life.
The Commission called on the government to urgently intensify security measures and ensure effective investigation and prosecution of perpetrators of violent crimes. It also urged authorities to provide adequate support and compensation to victims and their families.
The NHRC further appealed to Nigerians to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
According to the statement, the Commission will continue to monitor developments and advise relevant authorities on measures necessary to safeguard lives across the country.
