NCoS Blows Whistle on Viral TikTok Clip, Says Video Is Fake, Staged

The Nigerian Correctional Service has firmly dismissed a viral TikTok video alleging unethical conduct between its staff and inmates, describing the footage as fabricated, misleading and completely unconnected to any Nigerian custodial facility.

In a strongly worded statement issued from its headquarters in Abuja on Friday, the Service said investigations and visual assessment of the circulating clip revealed that the scene was clearly staged, resembling a movie set rather than a real correctional environment.

According to the NCoS, the uniforms worn by the supposed officers and inmates in the video do not match officially approved attire used across custodial centres nationwide. The Service further noted that the appearance of the individuals portrayed as inmates violates established regulations, stressing that inmates are not permitted to keep dreadlocks or unapproved hairstyles.

The Service also faulted the physical setting shown in the video, stating that it does not correspond with any recognised Nigerian Correctional Service facility, further reinforcing its position that the content is fictional.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service strongly dissociates itself from this malicious content and condemns the deliberate attempt to misrepresent and malign a critical national institution,” the statement read.

While reaffirming its openness to scrutiny and accountability, the NCoS warned against the spread of false narratives capable of undermining public trust, compromising institutional integrity, and misleading the public.

The Service urged Nigerians to seek information from verified and official channels and to disregard content designed to incite misinformation.

It reiterated its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the humane custody of inmates, in line with global best practices, assuring the public that it remains focused on its mandate despite attempts at digital disinformation.
