Bauchi State the home of Tourism has once again moved forward to position itself as North-East hub for specialised healthcare and tourism-led investment Bauchi, Nigeria –
The Bauchi State Government has announced plans to develop medical tourism as part of a broader strategy to improve healthcare delivery, attract investment, and diversify the state’s economy.
The initiative was unveiled by the Managing Director and State Conservator-General of the Bauchi State Tourism Development Corporation, Dr. Muhammad Nasir Yusuf, during an advocacy visit by members of Al-Mufeed Community Health Support Initiatives at his office in Bauchi.
Dr. Yusuf said the proposed medical tourism framework is designed to attract both local and international patients by upgrading healthcare infrastructure and improving the quality of medical services across the state.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the development vision of Governor Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, which prioritises economic diversification and the strengthening of social services, particularly healthcare.
He explained that the move would position Bauchi as a leading centre for specialised medical services in Nigeria’s North-East region, while stimulating private sector investment in hospitals, diagnostic centres, rehabilitation facilities, and wellness hubs.
“Medical tourism, when fully implemented, will improve access to quality healthcare for our people, attract international partnerships, create jobs, and generate sustainable revenue for the state,” Dr. Yusuf said.
He added that the Commission is working to integrate healthcare into Bauchi’s tourism value chain, stressing that a strong health system is essential for attracting visitors, investors, and skilled medical professionals.
“By leveraging tourism to support healthcare development, Bauchi State can achieve inclusive growth where economic expansion directly improves living standards and health outcomes,” he noted.
Earlier, the Executive Chairman of Al-Mufeed Community Health Support Initiatives, Suleiman Abubakar Ahmad, said the visit aimed to explore areas of collaboration with the Tourism Development Corporation to advance healthcare through tourism-driven initiatives.
Ahmad said the organisation is actively involved in community-based healthcare interventions, including medical outreach programmes, health awareness campaigns, and support for vulnerable populations across Bauchi State.
He noted that medical tourism could strengthen grassroots healthcare by improving facilities, enhancing service delivery, and expanding access to modern medical care in underserved communities.
“Medical tourism offers a practical way to bridge the gap between high-quality healthcare services and community-level needs, ensuring that no segment of the population is left behind,” Ahmad said.
He reaffirmed Al-Mufeed’s readiness to partner with the Bauchi State Tourism Development Corporation on healthcare-related tourism promotion, health worker capacity building, and policy advocacy aimed at improving public health outcomes.
“Our organisation is prepared to collaborate in promoting sustainable healthcare development, strengthening human capacity, and improving the overall wellbeing of the people of Bauchi State,” he added.
