Nigeria’s most capped footballer, Ahmed Musa, has officially announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a remarkable career that made him one of the most recognisable faces of the Super Eagles generation.
Musa, a two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner and former Super Eagles captain, confirmed his decision on Tuesday, ending more than a decade of service in the green and white of Nigeria.
From his explosive debut as a teenager to his iconic goals on the world’s biggest stage, Musa’s name is etched permanently in Nigerian football history. He remains Nigeria’s highest goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup, famously netting two unforgettable braces against Argentina in the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.
The Kano Pillars forward wore the Super Eagles jersey over 100 times, leading Nigeria at major tournaments including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup, and earning admiration for his pace, work rate and leadership on and off the pitch.
In a statement announcing his retirement, Musa described representing Nigeria as “the greatest honour of my life,” thanking fans, teammates and coaches for their unwavering support throughout his journey.
Tributes poured in from across the football world, with the Nigeria Football Federation, former teammates and fans hailing him as a true patriot and a symbol of commitment to the national cause.
As the Super Eagles turn a new page, Ahmed Musa exits the international stage as more than a footballer — a true Super Eagle whose legacy will soar for generations.
