Brigadier-General Walks Back to Base After Deadly Boko Haram, ISWAP Ambush

By Fatima Mukhtar

A senior Nigerian Army officer, a Brigadier-General, has returned to base alive after going missing during a deadly ambush carried out by Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters along the Damboa–Biu road in Borno State.

The attack, which occurred near Sabon Gari in Damboa Local Government Area, targeted a military convoy travelling with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). The insurgents reportedly laid an ambush along the route and opened heavy fire on the convoy.

Military sources said two soldiers and two CJTF operatives were killed in the attack. During the confrontation, the Brigadier-General in the convoy went missing, sparking deep concern within military circles and prompting urgent search efforts.

Hours later, the senior officer reportedly returned to the military base on foot, after managing to evade the insurgents and escape through the bush.

Security analysts noted that this is the first time in recent years that a serving General on frontline duty has gone missing during an ambush. The incident highlights the severe risks military personnel face in the ongoing war against terrorism in the North-East.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army is expected to intensify operations in the area to track down the attackers and restore security along the route, which has seen frequent militant activities.
