In a strong show of environmental responsibility, Dangote Cement Plc has rolled out a large-scale tree planting campaign in Obajana, Kogi State, to commemorate the 2026 International Day of Forests.
The initiative, driven by the company’s Transport Unit, saw hundreds of trees planted across host communities, while 13 schools received seedlings in a move aimed at nurturing environmental awareness among young Nigerians.
The event featured a symbolic display of tree planting led by the Sustainability Lead of Dangote Cement Transport Nigeria, Olumide Balogun, alongside representatives of schools and community members—signaling a shared commitment to protecting the environment.
Speaking at the occasion, Divisional Director Transport, Col. Hemant Rana (Rtd), represented by Assistant Divisional Director, Mr. Abdullahi Aliyu, emphasized the vital importance of forests in sustaining both life and economic systems.
“Forests play a crucial role in regulating climate, supporting biodiversity, and providing essential resources for humans,” he said, noting that the exercise aligns with ongoing efforts to combat deforestation and environmental degradation.
Balogun described forests as more than just trees, calling them “life-support systems” that regulate rainfall, improve air quality, prevent soil erosion, and provide habitats for countless species.
He urged communities and participating schools to take ownership of the initiative by nurturing the seedlings to maturity, stressing that sustainability goes beyond planting to long-term care.
“We believe that when we plant trees, we plant hope—for cleaner air, a healthier climate, and a more sustainable future,” he said.
Also speaking, Human Resources and Admin Manager at the Transport’s Post Trip Inspection Unit, Mr. Marcos-Akuso Daniel, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its environmental footprint through increased tree planting and deeper community engagement.
This year’s theme, “Forests and Economies,” highlights the critical role forests play in job creation, sustainable livelihoods, and economic resilience—an area where Dangote Group continues to position itself as a key contributor, being one of Nigeria’s largest private sector employers.
Observed globally every March 21, the International Day of Forests—established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012—serves as a reminder of the indispensable role forests play in providing food, medicine, clean water, and sustaining billions of lives worldwide.
With this initiative, Dangote Cement is not only marking a global event but also planting the seeds for a greener, more sustainable Nigeria.
