Iran Claims U S Seeking Ceasefire as War Rhetoric Escalates

By: Abdullahi Inuwa

Tensions in the Middle East intensified on Thursday after a senior Iranian official claimed that the United States had secretly requested negotiations for a ceasefire amid the escalating regional crisis.

According to Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Tehran received a message from the President of the United States through diplomatic channels in Oman urging talks to halt the growing confrontation.

“Tonight, we received messages from the U.S. president through the Omani mediator requesting negotiations for a ceasefire,” Larijani said in remarks that quickly spread across international media.

However, the Iranian official declared that Tehran had rejected the overture outright, insisting that negotiations would not take place under current conditions.

“Our response is that we will not accept any negotiations as long as an entity called Israel exists,” he added, referring to the long-standing hostility between Iran and Israel.

The statement signals a sharp escalation in rhetoric at a time when global powers are scrambling to prevent the widening conflict from destabilizing the entire Middle East.

Oman has historically played the role of a quiet diplomatic intermediary between Tehran and Washington, often facilitating backchannel communications during periods of heightened tensions.

Analysts say such mediation efforts have previously helped de-escalate crises, particularly during disputes involving sanctions, maritime security, and nuclear negotiations.

The latest claim from Tehran comes as hostilities and threats across the region continue to rattle global markets and raise fears of broader confrontation involving multiple regional actors.

Neither the government of the United States nor officials in Oman immediately confirmed Larijani’s assertion, leaving the diplomatic claim unverified as of press time.

Observers note that statements from political and military leaders during times of crisis are often part of strategic messaging aimed at influencing public opinion and negotiations behind the scenes.

Still, the rhetoric underscores the fragile state of regional diplomacy and the difficulty of securing any ceasefire agreement amid deep political and ideological divisions between Iran and Israel.

As global leaders monitor the situation closely, diplomatic efforts are expected to intensify in the coming days in a bid to prevent further escalation in one of the world’s most volatile regions.
