Setting the Record Straight: The Truth about Governor Radda’s Vehicle

By: Abdullahi Mohammed

I recently came across a false report circulating on media claiming that Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, purchased a multi-million naira BMW vehicle using state funds. This allegation is completely untrue and requires immediate clarification, especially as it involves someone who has always prioritize the needs and interest of the masses no matter what.

Since assuming office, Governor Radda has continued using vehicles inherited from his predecessor. This deliberate decision speaks high of his commitment to prudent management of state resources—a principle that guides every aspect of his administration.

Unlike some governors who change exotic cars two or three times within their tenure, Governor Radda has maintained the same vehicles for nearly three years. This is not coincidence; it is conscious leadership prioritizing development projects over personal luxury.

I could recall, while Dikko Radda was the Director General of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), he maintained the official vehicles used by his predecessor. And guess what, he discharged his duty exceedingly well. Today, he’s adjudged one of the best things that has happened to the Agency.

Those who follow the governor’s activities closely will recall an incident during an official visit to Kogi State two years ago, where his official vehicle’ tires developed a fault. Rather than delay proceedings or demand immediate replacement, Governor Radda simply exited the vehicle and joined another in the convoy to continue the journey.

This incident, though minor, speaks volumes about his character. A governor obsessed with luxury would have made dramatic demands. Governor Radda simply adapted and moved forward—focused on the mission, not the comfort.

On countless occasions, the governor has demonstrated transparency and accountability in managing state resources and taxpayers’ funds. His administration’s mantra is simple: every naira belongs to the people and must be accounted for.

Now, unto the vehicle generating false speculation. The vehicle in question a BMW was not purchased with state funds. I can confidently tell you. It was a personal gift to Governor Radda from his longtime friend and ally, Malam Dauda Lawal.

The two men have been friends for decades, working together on various developmental initiatives long before either held public office. The gift was given in good faith—a gesture of friendship, brotherhood, and shared commitment to progress.

Perhaps I should ask, if the naysayers can be objective. Is it a taboo for government officials to buy cars that’ll aid effective discharge of his or her official functions? Have they gone to other states and see the choice of exotic cars in their Governors’ convoy and compare with Katsina? We all know what we are doing, but it’s important we are fair. Not for today, but for posterity!

Let me also put this, in many cultures, including the Hausa’s, friends celebrate each other’s achievements and milestones. When someone you’ve journeyed with reaches a position of leadership, showing support through gifts is neither unusual nor inappropriate, especially when it involves no public funds.

So, who’s Dikko Radda to many of us? Governor Radda is widely known as Dan Amana—a man who keeps his promises. His promise to Katsina citizens was clear: Build Your Future. And he has relentlessly pursued this vision.

False allegations like this are not just attacks on Governor Radda personally—they are attempts to distract from the real work happening across Katsina State. They are designed to shift focus from completed roads, renovated schools, empowered communities, and reformed institutions.

Those peddling these falsehoods hope that by questioning the governor’s integrity, they can undermine public confidence in his administration’s achievements. They hope lies repeated loudly enough will drown out the truth being built quietly in communities across Katsina. But facts remain stubborn things. They won’t change.

To the critics, if Governor Radda purchased the vehicle with state funds, provide the payment voucher. Show the budget line. Present the procurement documents.

If these cannot be produced—because they do not exist—then those spreading these falsehoods owe the governor and Katsina citizens an apology.

Constructive criticism is welcome and necessary for democratic accountability. But fabricated allegations designed solely to damage reputation serve no public interest.

Before I round-off, let me say this unequivocally: Governor Radda’s integrity remains intact. His commitment to Katsina’s development remains unwavering. And his administration’s transparency remains open for all to see. The work continues. The progress continues. And no amount of falsehood will change that reality.
